It’s been a busy year for Google as always with new trends on the rise every day. With over a trillion searches in the Calendar year, Google trends tells us all that was searched for along with how frequently it was searched. Firstly, even with the US team not qualifying, Americans were really invested in the FIFA World Cup held in Russia.
“Obviously, the World Cup is a big moment,” VandenBerg told WTOP, “but it was surprising to me because of the fact that the U.S. didn’t qualify, so we didn’t necessarily directly participate, but to still see it trend and to see people really come together over that and get excited over that was pretty cool.”
In this article, we have taken the time to put in the top searches according to the top categories on Google. 2019 is here now so let’s take a glimpse in to how 2018 ended;
Sports – FIFA World Cup

The World Cup was without a doubt the biggest event of the year with France lifting their second title. Google estimated that the world cup final was searched over 100 million times on the daily basis on the day of the final in Moscow.
Actors – Logan Paul

The most-searched person in the “actor” category was 23-year-old Logan Paul, a controversial figure who got his start on YouTube. Paul infamously posted video of him in a forest near Mount Fuji in Japan near what seemed to be a body hanging from a tree. YouTube says the images violated its policies and suspended the 22-year-old. He afterward called the posting a “horrible lack of judgment.” He says he’ll “think twice … maybe three times” about what he posts. The video was viewed some 6 million times before being removed from Paul’s YouTube channel, a verified account with more than 15 million subscribers.
Athletes – Tristan Thompson

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson was the most searched trending athlete on Google in 2018. After Thompson, Google trends revealed that the other most searched athletes were Shaun White, Lindsey Vonn, Le’Veon Bell, Kawhi Leonard, Dez Bryant, Nick Foles, Chloe Kim, Naomi Osaka and Johnny Weir. The World Cup was the most searched term and the most searched news event. The Cavaliers, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears and Milwaukee Brewers were the most searched professional teams. Per Google trends, Thompson’s name was most often searched during the week of April 8-14. It was the same time the public became aware that Thompson supposedly cheated on Khloe Kardashian.
Diet – Keto Diet

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that in medicine is used primarily to treat difficult-to-control epilepsy in children. The diet forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates.
Fashion Brands – Fashion Nova
Fashion Nova is an online clothing website that became the most popular fashion brand. While the usual suspects are listed — Louis Vuitton, Versace, Givenchy, Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Fashionphile, Dior, and Moschino — it’s Cardi B’s favorite fast-fashion retailer (rap that three times fast!) that claims the number one spot.
