It’s been a roller coaster of a year and we understand if you just want to curl up on your couch during the holidays and jump in to the world of entertainment. It’s the time of the year you might actually enjoy watching movies you never imagined yourself watching. It’s the time for as they say “guilty pleasures”, so time to get some comfort food from your favorite take out place and just chill.
When it comes to movies, genres don’t really matter as long as you enjoy what you watch. You can watch a black comedy for Christmas and nobody can stop you. It’s a naughty boy’s world after all. However, if you got kids, we suggest something both adults and kids can equally enjoy and when they’re asleep, then you can watch whatever the hell you damn well please. Plus, we’ve got movies for all moods so you can go ahead and watch the cheesiest romantic movies or action packed thrillers or maybe even dive in to the world of adventure and comedy.
Here are our top 8 picks;
1. Die Hard
To millennials, Die Hard is the go to classic action movie to watch at any given time of the year. So much so it set the standard for all movies of this genre. In this tech crazy world, we’re now accustomed to movies with the best visual stunts, tech gadgets and some lame future story line. Some of us still want to experience the 90s nostalgia with old school car chases, killer catch phrases and a villain as great as the main antagonist. Die Hard is what you play for your kids when they say,” dad, we wanna watch an action movie”. If they don’t love it, well there’s always room for more.
2. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
I was 9 years old when I watched “How the Grinch stole Christmas” for the first time. I remember waiting for Jim Carrey to come in during the full span of the movie only to realize that he was the Grinch all along. Nonetheless, this movie is a must watch for all ages to get the Christmas spirit up. Plus, it’ll be a great watch for the kids after the watch the animated version starring Benedict Cumberbatch this December. You can even tell them this was the one your mother and I watched when we were younger.
3. Home Alone
This is hands down the most hilarious movie you can watch around Christmas. In case you missed this family Christmas caper, it’s about a boy who gets left behind when his family goes to Paris for the Holiday. As his parents struggle to get back to him, he ends up having to defend his home from robbers who are determined to make their own Christmas cheer by stealing everything in the house.
4. Harry Potter Marathon
If you have a whole weekend to yourself around Christmas, then you have the opportunity to watch the greatest marathon worthy movies of all time. I personally watched the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings together and had one the best Christmas weekend till date. This year will be no different as I plan to watch all the Harry Potter movies together. If you plan on watching just one of the seven, I suggest you go for Prisoner of Azkaban which was my favorite Harry Potter movie.
5. Batman Returns
Before the Dark Knight Trilogy and the god awful DCEU version of Batman, we had the Tim Burton’s take on the character. Yes, it’s exactly how you imagine it; creepy and full of suspense. In the 90s, this was the go to superhero movie. It is understandable that the visuals will definitely not be up to the standard you’re accustomed to, nonetheless, the story will keep you attached to the screen.
6. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Eventually the kids will go to sleep at some point so what do you watch next. Why not watch one of the best Christmas comedies in the last two decades? Kiss Kiss Bang Bang stars Robert Downey Jr. who plays a Christmas “shopping” thief forced to masquerade as an actor, and Val Kilmer as the private detective hired to help him get in character. Sure, most of us cannot see Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark so it might be difficult for us to see him play another character. You will be pleasantly thrilled after watching this one.
7. Groundhog Day
We can all pretty much relate to this movie. Reliving the same day going to work and following the same routine. Groundhog day is one of the funniest movies you can watch especially around the holidays when its chilly. It is about a TV weatherman who finds himself reliving the same day over and over again when he goes on location to the small town of Punxsutawney to film a report about their annual Groundhog Day. His predicament drives him to distraction, until he sees a way of turning the situation to his advantage.
8. Shrek Marathon
Shrek will forever be one of the greatest animated movies of all time. If your young kids haven’t watched Shrek, then you’re just a bad parent. I mean seriously, this movie makes me laugh even when I have watched it for the hundredth time.
